Ashana Sophia laughing in a garden of tall pink watsonia and green blades, in a white cotton dress

AshanaSophia Devotional Folk

Come as you are. Lay down the weight you’ve been carrying.

Before you hear a single note, I hope you feel yourself soften.

Listen

My music is where I tell the truth.

Walk barefoot through this garden. Listen with your whole heart.

Every song is an offering. Every note is an invitation to remember what the heart has always known.

Sòma Lúz

A body of light, sung in company.

The songs I made with Sòma Lúz — a world-fusion folk ensemble — my cello and voice woven with many hands.

Her story

Somewhere between heaven and earth.

Every song carries pieces of my own journey: the joy, the grief, the surrender, the hope, and the endless return to love.

It is rooted in bare feet on warm soil, the scent of rain, wild vines climbing through the forest, birds calling at dawn, and the quiet that comes when the heart finally lets go. At the same time, it reaches toward something luminous, something that reminds me we belong to more than what we can see.

When I write, I imagine a hidden garden after the rain. Everything is alive. Flowers are opening. The air is warm and fragrant. Light slips gently through the trees, and for a moment, nothing needs to be rushed.

I view music as a transcendent language, aiming to touch the depths of our hearts and awaken forgotten parts of ourselves.

I don’t try to hide life’s rough edges. I simply want to hold them with beauty.

In her words

The intensity of who I am is fully embraced.

At a certain point, the words aren’t even there for me anymore, and I’m completely inside the experience, the most powerful place.

What advice would you have for someone listening to this music for the first time?

To stay out of their heads as much as possible in all the ways in which we decide to judge what it is we’re experiencing or not experiencing, and how it is that we decide whether or not we like an artist or the music.

Besides music, what are some of the other things you’re creating?

Music is the area I love the most and it’s the one that I’m most afraid of; therefore, it’s taken me the longest to embrace. But I’m a sucker for beauty, any kind of beauty. I love textiles and perfumes, anything that appeals to the senses.

I started out in the realm of food. In my 20s, I was a private chef; that’s how I made my living. Ram Dass was very pivotal in healing a bunch of unhealthy thoughts for me surrounding that. He said, ‘The fastest way to spiritual growth is to feed people.’ And so it was very healing for me to think of all those years that I just fed people.

As your taste in music has changed over the years, how has that changed your own music?

I don’t think I’ve changed very much. I remember being three years old and singing this music already. I’ve just slowly been opening up and I’ve been willing to be seen and heard. I’ve also learned to trust the process.
